The study of the firm's Cologuard test is expected to include more than 10,000 patients between the ages of 50 and 84 who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer.

The company said that it has achieved encouraging results in a preclinical study of the assay, and that if clinical trial results are equally positive it will submit the test for US Food and Drug Administration approval by the end of the summer.

The firms have begun a validation sudy of the Down syndrome test, which runs on Illumina’s HiSeq platform.

Efforts spearheaded by Sage Bionetworks and Genetic Alliance hope to encourage drug developers to share precompetitive genomic data from the comparator arms of drug trials and to give study participants more control over their own data generated in clinical investigations.

The companies' first project will be a renal cancer clinical trial for an undisclosed Quintiles client. The partners aim to identify genetic markers that are predictive of adverse events and efficacy.

Alnylam also released its first-quarter financial results, reporting higher losses and lower revenues.

However, the company confirmed that it is no longer commercializing its test, the Enigma ML Influenza A/B detection assay, in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline as was previously reported.

Enigma's testing platform combines fully automated sample extraction with real-time PCR amplification and detection and is designed to achieve results in less than one hour.

The BATTLE trial was the first prospective, adaptively randomized study in pretreated non-small cell lung cancer patients that mandated tumor profiling with “real time” biopsies. The 255 patients in the trial were adaptively randomized to four arms — erlotinib, vandetanib, erlotinib plus bexarotene, or sorafenib — based on their biomarker profiles.

The deal will provide "biopharmaceutical firms with a better understanding of modes of action of a variety of therapeutics and the role of biomarkers in the oncology drug development process."
