Top 10 GenomeWeb Articles in 2024: New Technologies and Policies, Painful Business Decisions, More

NEW YORK – GenomeWeb's readers were most interested in new omics technologies, the business of tools companies, policy decisions, and reimbursement in 2024.

Among the 10 most-read stories this year, the top spot was taken by an article about Single Technologies, a Swedish startup that is developing a high-throughput DNA sequencer using a 3D matrix. Also popular was an update on Illumina's technology pipeline this summer, including a five-base genome that includes methylation detection, comprehensive whole-genome sequencing, PIPseq single-cell analysis, and a proteomics assay developed with Standard BioTools. Liquid biopsy was another technology area that drew interest from readers, making a review of the field early in the year one of the most popular reads.

As in previous years, readers were also drawn to GenomeWeb's extensive coverage of the JP Morgan Healthcare conference at the beginning of the year in order to learn about the business plans of the major omics tools and molecular diagnostics firms.

Also of interest were articles about business decisions — sometimes painful — made by a number of industry players, including Pacific Biosciences' layoffs of almost 200 employees in April and NanoString Technologies' Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in February (the company was subsequently acquired by Bruker).

New policies affecting tools companies and diagnostic developers gained attention, too, including an article about the US Food and Drug Administration's final rule on regulating laboratory-developed tests and a story about the Biosecure Act, legislation that would severely affect the US business of China-based companies like BGI and MGI Tech. Additionally, an article about the lack of reimbursement for genetic counseling services piqued readers' interest.
