Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) proposed an up-front cash prize system to reward inventors and encourage innovation, reports Slate. Though this system might spur work to aid neglected populations and could eliminate drug monopolies and licensing fees, it is problematic -- especially because of its estimated $80 billion a year cost. "Instead of setting up an industrywide prize system, a few reputable charities (or a government agency with a brilliant PR team and an ironclad escrow account) should offer attractive prizes for solutions to carefully chosen problems," suggests Slate.
