Even after attending a session on obtaining NIH grants, Juniorprof is still confused about the role of preliminary data in new investigators' applications -- especially with the new 12-page application. The presenters said that new investigators would not have to have as much preliminary data as established investigators, but Juniorprof says this goes against all he's heard from people on study sections. "Basically, I have no idea how to reconcile these disparate views and I said as much in the session. No clear answers but the new rules for new investigators were referenced heavily in all responses," Juniorprof writes.
