At Discovering Biology in a Digital World, Sandra Porter discusses what software biology students should be learning. While she uses Excel and Google Docs, she says students should choose programs based on three criteria: which programs they will be expected to know when they graduate, programs that have essential features, and programs that other instructors are using.
