At Discovering Biology in a Digital World, Sandra Porter discusses what software biology students should be learning. While she uses Excel and Google Docs, she says students should choose programs based on three criteria: which programs they will be expected to know when they graduate, programs that have essential features, and programs that other instructors are using. From her teaching experience, she thinks students are best off becoming proficient with one tool because "after they have learned one program really well, they will have the confidence and knowledge to transfer those skills to other programs."
