Hey, Universities: Let the Knowledge Out

Steven Salzberg calls on researchers to pressure their universities to promote free dissemination of knowledge through open-access journals and patent-free research. He says that universities' drive to produce intellectual property contradicts the original purpose of academic research — to promote knowledge. "Even the very notion of intellectual property rights is preventing both the dissemination of knowledge and of valuable medical treatments," Salzberg writes.
