Sandra Porter was inspired by a conference on science education this summer — until she read the press release for the event. In it, AAAS CEO Alan Leshner says the goal of undergraduate science education is for student to learn "what science is, and what it is not." The release goes on to say that educators should "not to fall into the trap of shifting the goal toward developing a scientific workforce." Porter says that sentiments like that "help limit diversity and restrict science to the upper-class" as "some people need more assurances that their education will lead to a job."
