President-elect Obama has offered the position of surgeon general to CNN reporter and neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta, reports the Washington Post. Around the blogosphere, there is a variety of reactions. At Terra Sigillata, Abel Pharmboy says Gupta is a good pick because he knows the failings of the US healthcare system and many Americans already trust him for health information, while Orac at Respectful Insoloence says not only does Gupta lack gravitas, he thinks Gupta has "made some high profile stumbles" in his coverage at CNN. At the New York Times, Paul Krugman weighs in, recalling Gupta's treatment of Michael Moore over the documentary Sicko. "Gupta specifically claimed that Moore 'fudged his facts', when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong," Krugman says.
