When scouting out where to do a postdoc, grad students should find mentors who will help them learn to write grants, promote their research through speaking engagements and writing reviews, and encourage them to join professional societies, says Juniorprof. "Is it fair? Maybe, maybe not, but remember that all of these things are additional work and if you don't take them seriously they can backfire on you in a major way."
