E. Coli: I Just Gotta Be Me

In the New York Times, Carl Zimmer writes about the individuality of E. coli. He describes how a colony of identical E. coli is actually a collection of individuals that will react differently to the same stimuli. He ascribes some of these differences to the pattern of methylation on its DNA. "At the very least, E. coli individuality should be a warning to those who would put human nature down to any sort of simple genetic determinism. Living things are more than just programs run by genetic software," he writes.
