The Real Question Is, How Badly Do You Want to Be Called 'Doctor'?

SciWo has a blog post responding to a reader's question about whether it's worth pursuing a PhD for someone who already has a master's in science. The argument for staying put, SciWo says, is that the reader is currently happy: "You've found a sweet gig where you can see yourself staying. Why put yourself through the economic and academic hardship of a PhD, just to prove to a nebulous someone that you can do it?" However, the opportunities for advancement won't be as clear for someone who doesn't have a PhD, she adds. "I'd spend some real time reflecting on what you really want from your life and career and exploring the various options you have with an MS if you decide to move on from your current position."
