Obama Administration Expands OPT Program

ScienceInsider's Yudhijit Bhattacharjee says that some foreign students studying at US universities now have up to 29 months, instead of 12, to find a job and stay in the country after graduation. The US Department of Homeland Security extended its Optional Practical Training program, or OPT, to include students graduating from programs in several dozen additional disciplines, including soil microbiology, systems science and theory, psychopharmacology, and medical informatics. By expanding the OPT list, "the Obama administration is helping to address shortages in certain high tech sectors of talented scientists and technology experts," the department said in a statement.
