Blogger Jade says that newly minted PhDs who are interested in pursuing careers in industry ought to apply for postdoc positions in their area of interest right away. Beyond learning how to do independent research, Jade says that postdocs are a great "time to learn skills that you don't have." As pharma and biotech firms seek job candidates who have a variety of skills, postdoc training is "perfect" for those looking to gain experience with a new technique or in an altogether new field, she adds. During a period of postdoc training, researchers can also "take on opportunities to manage another scientist, maybe a lab technician or an intern" as "management training is so valuable to employers" in industry, Jade says.
