In the Chronicle of Higher Education, a commentary from three people at the Association of American Medical Colleges says that US stimulus act presents an "exceptional opportunity" for research and training and for growing the NIH budget. The authors write:

"If the impact ... turns out to be mediocre at best (at least in the short-fuse time span acceptable to elected representatives), and if Congress therefore feels justified in maintaining flat-lined federal spending, this would seem to be akin to basing the future of the US research enterprise on the outcome of a pop quiz," she writes.
