The Wall Street Journal has announced the winners of its 2008 Technology Innovation Awards. They include the PhyloChip, a microchip developed by LBNL's Gary Andersen and his team to analyze DNA "to identify thousands of different varieties of bacteria that might be present in air, water, soil, blood or tissue samples," according to WSJ.

As the UN ponders a ban on gene drives, one malaria researchers says there are less dramatic ways to fight the disease in Africa than unleashing GM mosquitoes on a whole continent.
