Luminex has received US Patent Number 6,411,904, “Zero dead time architecture for flow cytometer.” The patent covers a method for detecting biological analytes quickly. In the method a circular buffer is used to store data from a flow analyzer in a number of data storage areas. The user can specify the sampling rate, method, size, and number of storage areas, and the size of the buffer, the signal-to-noise threshold, order of processing, and fixed trailing distance. In addition, the system uses logic and algorithms to permit re-examination and potential reprocessing of “old” subthreshold data improve the signal-to-noise ratio of an assay.

“This is an extremely important addition to our intellectual property portfolio,” stated Van Chandler, chief technology officer at Luminex. “Combined with patents on real-time multiplexed analysis and methods for creating distinguishable sets of microspheres, this patent ensures the continued superiority of the Luminex platform over classical flow analyzers.”

 

Affymetrix has received US Patent Number 6,416,952, “Photolithographic and other means for manufacturing arrays,” US Patent Number 6,391,592, “Blocker-aided target amplification of nucleic acids,” and US Patent Number 6,391,550, “Identification of molecular sequence signatures and methods involving the same.”

The first invention includes methods for sequencing, fingerprinting, and mapping biological polymers and other macromolecules using sequence-specific recognition reagents. The second covers the use of a blocking molecule to inhibit amplification, reverse transcription, or duplication of unwanted sequence. This blocking molecule can have a sequence that is complementary to the unwanted sequence. The molecule can be made of locked nucleic acid or peptide nucleic acid, as well as other nucleic acids and analogues. The third patent covers methods of analyzing hybridization data by selecting probe sets that define reference sequences, then derive useful data about the target nucleic acid or peptides molecule such as whether it encodes members of a gene family, is derived from certain genes, or contains a particular nucleic acid or peptide sequence signature.
