Jack Goldstein, Dennis Rossi, Garry Miyada, Maria Carles


Jack Goldstein has joined Illumina's board of directors, the company said this week.

Goldstein most recently served as president and chief operating officer of Chiron until it was acquired by Novartis in April. Prior to Chiron, he spent two years as a general partner at Windamere Venture Partners, preceded by four years at Applied Imaging, first as president and CEO and then later as chairman.

Goldstein spent over a decade at Ortho Diagnostic Systems, a Johnson & Johnson company, in various executive positions including four years as president. He was earlier vice president of R&D at a division of Baxter Healthcare, Illumina said.

Dennis Rossi, Gene Logic's senior vice-president and general manager for genomics, resigned for personal reasons and to pursue other career opportunities, Gene Logic said last week (see Briefs, this issue).

Garry Miyada joined NuGEN Technologies as vice-president of product development, the company said last week.

Miyada spent the past 14 years at Affymetrix, where he held several positions, including senior director of expression product development. Prior to Affymetrix, he spent five years as a research scientist at Syva.

Miyada was a post-doctoral fellow at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope. He received his PhD in molecular biology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Maria Carles has been named vice president of scientific operations at Gwathmey, the company said this week.

She joins the array-based diagnostics firm from the Scripps Research Institute where she worked in the molecular and experimental medicine department.

Carles holds degrees in drug targeting, immunology, and microbiology from Northeastern University.
