GeneChip CustomExpress, Pan Chromosome 21 Array, MagaPureEX

Affymetrix has introduced its GeneChip CustomExpress program, which allows customers to design low-density arrays of 1,000 probes or less using GeneChip probe sets and the same chip manufacturing system as the GeneChip system. Customers can order the arrays through the company’s NetAffx online information system,, which it launched July 25. (See p. 1)

MWG-Biotech has begun selling its Pan Chromosome 21 Array, which includes all known genes for Chromosome 21 and consists of 498 gene-specific oligonucleotide probes.

The chip, which has been beta-tested at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin and can be used to investigate gene expression in Chromosome 21-associated diseases such as Down Syndrome, is the first human chip in MWG Biotech’s Pan Array series. The company said is planning to introduce additional human DNA Pan Array chips for cancer research, and with the entire 30,000 genes in the human genome.

Cortex Biochem of San Leandro, Calif., has introduced its MagaPureEX magnetic separation platform for nucleic acid isolation. The magnetic platform uses the company’s magnetizable particles technology and does not require centrifuges, vacuum systems, or columns. Once isolated, the samples can be used immediately for PCR, sequencing or other downstream applications.
