Catherine Burzik, Mike Hunkapiller, Blair Sheppard, Julian Adams, Joseph Bolen, Robert Tepper, Thomas Crawford, John Bennett, Ed Umali, David Haen, Carolyn French


Catherine Burzik joins Applied Biosystems as executive vice president and will become a member of the Applera management executive committee, the company said. She will report to Mike Hunkapiller, president of Applied Biosystems. Burzik has been president of Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, a Johnson & Johnson company. Burzik will be responsible for global commercial activities, including the product management organizations (DNA Platforms, Discovery Proteomics and Small Molecule, and Knowledge Business), sales and service, marketing, business development, and strategic planning. Previously, Burzik was general manager and vice president of J&J’s Critikon, as well as holding a number of positions with Eastman Kodak.


Blair Sheppard joined the board of directors of Research Triangle Park, NC-based Amphora Discovery, a chemical genomics firm. Sheppard is president and CEO of Duke Executive Education and is the former senior associate dean of The Fuqua School of Business of Duke University.


Julian Adams will join Infinity Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, Mass., as chief science officer, effective Oct. 6. Adams is senior vice president, drug discovery and development at Millennium Pharmaceuticals. Joseph Bolen, senior vice president, discovery research, and Robert Tepper, president, research and development, will assume Adams’ responsibilities on an interim basis and Thomas Crawford, formerly global head of the chemical research and development group at Pfizer, will continue in his role as vice president, strategic development, reporting to Tepper. A vice president of drug discovery and development is actively being recruited, Millennium said. Adams joined Millennium through the merger with LeukoSite in October of 1999. Prior to joining Millennium, he was senior vice president of research and development at LeukoSite.


John Bennett joins Bio-Reference Laboratories as chairman of its newly formed scientific advisory board. Bennett is professor emeritus and former head of the medical oncology unit at the University of Rochester medical center.


Ed Umali will become director of operations, David Haen will become director of business development, and Carolyn French will become director of communications for Los Angeles-based CytRx. All three were associated with The Kriegsman Group, an investment bank. Umali and Haen will continue to provide services for that firm.
