Applera of Foster City, Calif., received US Patent No. 6,573,089, “Method for using and making a fiber array.” The patent covers a system for mixing chemicals, and describes a device that includes a support plate with a channel for receiving a chemical, and a fiber holding a second chemical. The patent also describes a system for reading the fiber array, a method for manufacturing the array, and a description for its use.
Rock Mountain Biosystems of Golden, Colo., received US Patent No. 6,573,491, “Electromagnetic energy driven separation methods.” The patent describes a system for using electromagnetic energy for separating molecules in a mixture, for increasing the diffusion rate of a substance in a medium, and for moving fluids on a substrate. The inventors claim the method works with extremely small volumes of target and is applicable to microarrays.
Molecular Staging of New Haven, Conn., received US Patent No. 6,573,051, “Open circle probes with intramolecular stem structures.” The patent describes a system for reducing or eliminating unwanted, undesirable, or non-specific amplification products in nucleic acid amplification reactions, such as rolling circle amplification. One form of composition is an open circle probe that can form an intramolecular stem structure, such as a hairpin structure, at one or both ends. The stem structure allows the open circle probe to be circularized when hybridized to a legitimate target sequence but results in inactivation of uncircularized open circle probes. This inactivation, which preferably involves stabilization of the stem structure, extension of the end of the open circle probe, or both, reduces or eliminates the ability of the open circle probe to prime nucleic acid synthesis or to serve as a template for rolling circle amplification. The disclosed method is useful for detection, quantitation, and/or location of any desired analyte, such as proteins and peptides, the inventors claim.
