Agilent Technologies has received US Patent No. 7,078,505, "Manufacture of arrays with varying deposition parameters." The patent claims methods for synthesizing a plurality of compounds on the surface of supports. The synthesis comprises a series of cycles of steps in which reagents for conducting the synthesis are deposited on the surface of the support to form the chemical compounds. Synthesis is then conducted in at least two sets of cycles. Each cycle comprises at least one step of depositing reagents on a surface by means of droplet dispensing elements that traverse the surface of the support.

Invitrogen has received US Patent No. 7,079,241, "Spatial positioning of spectrally labeled beads." The patent claims devices, systems, kits, and methods for detecting and identifying a plurality of spectrally labeled bodies for performing multiplexed assays. By spectrally labeling the beads with materials that generate identifiable spectra, a plurality of beads may be identified within the fluid. Reading of the beads is facilitated by restraining the beads in arrays and using a focused laser.

University of Medicine & Dentistry of Newark, NJ, has received US Patent No. 7,079,673, "Systems for analyzing microtissue arrays." The patent claims systems capable of autonomously imaging, analyzing, and storing data for samples in a tissue microarray. The system may include a tissue microarray, a robotic microscope, and an imaging workstation that executes software to automatically control operation of the microscope to capture images from the microarray and analyze image results. A low magnification may be used to register samples within the microarray and obtain coordinates for each tissue specimen, according to the patent. Higher magnifications may be used to analyze images of each registered specimen. Images and quantitative data from the images may then be stored in a relational database for subsequent review. The system may be local, or may be Web-based for distributed control and sharing of results.
