NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Affymetrix is laying off 38 employees at its West Sacramento, Calif., facilities as the firm completes a restructuring that it began in 2006.
The layoffs, scheduled to occur on July 6, were listed on the website of California's Employment Development Department.
Last summer, Affy said that it would close the West Sacramento manufacturing facility and move the majority of its probe array manufacturing to its Singapore operations by the end of 2008.
Last week, Affymetrix CFO John Batty told investors at the Bank of America and Merrill Lynch Healthcare Conference in New York that the migration of array production to Singapore was fully completed last quarter. "One-hundred percent of our arrays are being produced in our Singapore manufacturing facility, and the Sacramento facility has been shut down," he said.
Affy expects the restructuring, which it also said has now been fully completed, will save the firm around $25 million annually.
