Waters Leads BCW Index Gains

Shares in Waters rose 6.3 percent for the week ended Tuesday, lifted by the release of its third-quarter results, which showed a 10-percent rise in revenue and a nearly doubling of its profit (see related article). The firm edged out Thermo Electron, which gained 6.2 percent for the trading period, as investors reacted warmly to strong third-quarter results reported by Thermo’s pending merger partner, Fisher Scientific (see related article).
 
The biggest decliner for the week was Bruker Biosciences, which dropped 3.2 percent. Overall, only four of the companies in the Index lost value for the week.
 
The Index closed Tuesday up 2.2 percent for the week. It beat the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which gained 1.5 percent, the Nasdaq, which was flat, and a .3-percent gain for the Nasdaq Biotech Index.
