Scripps Health, Cornell, NIH: AARP's Top Three Employers for Workers over 50


Scripps Health took top honors on AARP's 2011 "Best Employers for Workers Over 50" list, and is noted for its retirement planning assistance programs. AARP named Cornell University the second-best employer for mature workers, lauding the school's "Encore Cornell Program, [which] provides retirees with employment opportunities, volunteer opportunities … and enrichment opportunities." And AARP has named the National Institutes of Health the third-best place to work for employees over 50 for its annual list of top employers. To make the cut, employer had to submit to AARP "a comprehensive application that includes questions about their human resources practices and policies," the association says. From there, AARP evaluates potential awardees based on their recruiting practices; training, education, and career development opportunities; workplace accommodations; alternative work options; employee health and pension benefits; and retiree benefits. According to the association, NIH is a prime place for employees over 50 to work because it "financially educates its employees" through several initiatives.
