In November 2000, the state founded the North Carolina Genomics and Bioinformatics Consortium. Through the consortium, participating universities, companies, service organizations, foundations, and nonprofit public interest organizations can share information and resources, as well as negotiate deals collectively. The consortium has also spearheaded the drive for ultra-high-speed networking and shared supercomputing resources for the area’s bioinformatics work.
