NIH Re-Issues Call for RNAi-Related SBIR/STTR Proposals

NEW YORK, Oct. 24 (GenomeWeb News) - The National Institutes of Health last week re-issued a program announcement calling for proposals focused on developing commercial technologies to improve chemical synthesis and delivery of RNAi.


In particular, the program announcement is seeking research projects that incorporate "hemical modifications that change the properties of the siRNA molecules to increase their stability and their ability to be delivered more efficiently to target cells without increasing their toxicity," the NIH said.  


Examples of projects the announcement is seeking include, but are not limited to, the development and identification of chemical modifications to improve thermal stability of dsRNA; the development of nucleic acid modifications leading to resistance to nuclease digestion but still allowing efficient processing by Dicer; and the development of improved instrumentation that will synthesize long oligonucleotides reliably and with high fidelity.


According to the NIH, the number of awards made under this solicitation will depend on the overall scientific merit of the applications and the availability of funds. Awards will be made using the Small Business Technology Transfer and Small Business Innovation Research grant mechanisms.
