FlowCytomix Bead-Based Multiplexing Assays

Beckman Coulter has introduced FlowCytomix Bead-Based Multiplexing Assays for the simultaneous detection of multiple cytokines and other analytes in drug and clinical research. Based on a sandwich immunoassay, FlowCytomix kits use the same principles as ELISAs, yet deliver up to 10 analytes per well. The kits can be run on any flow cytometer with 488 nm excitation, including Beckman Coulter’s automated FC 500 Series, EPICS XL Series and Quanta systems, all of which have the flexibility to process both bead- and cell-based assays.

Solexa Genome Analysis System

Solexa has introduced its DNA sequencing, expression profiling, and microRNA analysis platform, the Solexa Genome Analysis System. The system, which is comprised of the Solexa 1G Genetic Analyzer, the Solexa Cluster Station and associated reagents, consumables, and software, is designed to generate over a billion bases of sequence per run.



EGFR Mutation Test Kit

Low-level tumor mutations and deletions in the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor gene can now be detected with unrivaled simplicity and sensitivity following the launch by DxS of the first in a range of oncology mutation test kits. The EGFR Mutation Test Kit combines the specificity of AstraZeneca’s ARMS (allele specific PCR) technology with the sensitivity of DxS’s Scorpions signaling system to deliver a quantitative and robust validated test for EGFR mutations in tumor samples.




Fuji Photo Film has launched the FLA-7000, an advanced fluorescent image analyzer for biological research. The FLA-7000 can analyze samples by both radioisotope and fluorescence detection as well as digitally scan them using a fluorescent screen. Used in combination with analyzing software Decodon Delta2D, the FLA-7000 can quickly and accurately examine 2-D gel electrophoresis. The analyzer comes in two models: one that supports both IP and RGB lasers and another that supports IP laser only.

MIDAS Traq Systems

Applied Biosystems and its joint venture partner MDS Sciex, a division of MDS, has introduced MIDAS Traq Systems, two new mass spectrometry-based systems designed to provide rapid, multiplex solutions for protein biomarker verification and validation. These high-throughput systems employ the innovative MIDAS workflow to help researchers move from protein biomarker discovery to validation more quickly. MIDAS Traq systems integrate the unique quantitative and qualitative capabilities of the 4000 Q Trap and 3200 Q Trap LC/MS/MS Systems with the new Tempo nano MDLC System and automation software to provide a solution to the bottleneck between protein biomarker discovery and high-sensitivity quantitative validation.

Tempo Liquid Chromatography systems

Applied Biosystems, together with its joint venture partner MDS Sciex, has launched Tempo Liquid Chromatography systems, providing integrated front-end solutions for researchers performing LC/MS and LC MALDI-based experiments. High pressure liquid chromatography, a separation step that purifies and resolves compounds in complex matrices, is a staple in life sciences research laboratories, and is often performed prior to mass spectrometry analysis. With the introduction of Tempo LC systems, Applied Biosystems/MDS Sciex will offer complete application-based solutions for proteomics, biomarker, and drug discovery studies.

Human Cytokine Antibody Array

The new multiplex Human Cytokine Antibody Array provides a simple, focused way to streamline the study of immune system regulation and disease. It allows simultaneous measurement of 16 human cytokines from each sample of serum or cellular supernatant analyzed. Researchers can get optimal sensitivity and dynamic range while conserving samples and time. Instead of performing traditional ELISAs, which require large sample volumes and significant processing time, scientists can now analyze multiple cytokines with parallel sample processing.

Exiqon has launched their miRcury Arrays for highly sensitive profiling of miRNAs in human, mouse, and rat. The miRcury product series also includes the miRcury Array Labeling kit for direct labeling of miRNAs from total RNA samples.


NCode microRNA Microarray platform

Invitrogen introduced its NCode microRNA Microarray platform. The NCode miRNA profiling platform enables sensitive profiling of miRNAs while using extremely simple methods that provide both experienced and novice microarray users a rapid path to new discoveries. NCode permits researchers to study miRNA function by allowing them to profile the miRNA expression patterns in a given disease or developmental state.



DNA Free Sensitive-Taq DNA Polymerase

Amresco’s DFS (DNA Free Sensitive)-Taq DNA Polymerase is a thermostable enzyme of approximately 94kDa isolated from eubacterium Thermus aquaticus strain YT-1. The enzyme catalyzes the polymerization of nucleotides into duplex DNA in the 5'' 3'' direction in the presence of magnesium ions and possesses a 5'' 3'' exonuclease activity. This unmodified enzyme replicates DNA at 72°C, is highly purified, and is free of nonspecific endo- or exonucleases. It is suitable for work in bacterial genomics and reduces the probability that any contamination may lead to non-specific amplification or artifacts during a PCR reaction.


HotStart-IT Taq DNA Polymerase

The new HotStart-IT Taq DNA Polymerase from USB uses a novel hot start method designed and developed at USB called primer sequestration. USB has combined high-quality USB Taq DNA Polymerase with a recombinant protein which binds and sequesters primers at lower temperatures making them unavailable for use by Taq DNA Polymerase. This primer-sequestration technique effectively blocks DNA synthesis from mis-priming events at lower temperatures. Following the initial denaturation step during PCR, the protein is inactivated and the primers are free to participate in the amplification reaction. This method enhances many complex PCR reactions by increasing both specificity and yield.

The first human PCR primer set for genome-wide splice variant detection was launched by Jivan Biologics, a privately held company located in Berkeley, Calif. Using Jivan’s splice variant-specific PCR primers, scientists can quickly identify changes in RNA splicing for human genes of interest. Scientists can discover new splice isoforms by sequencing unexpected PCR products.

The standardized 96-well plate allows great flexibility and consistent well-to-well and plate-to-plate performance to ensure high reproducibility.

His SpinTrap is a single-use spin column designed for efficient purification of histidine-tagged proteins using a standard microcentrifuge. His SpinTrap allows direct loading of unclarified homogenized cell lysates, without the need for centrifugation or filtration of the sample. The device eliminates the need for tedious sample preparation and enables direct protein purification in as little as 10 minutes per run. By reducing the total purification time, the spin column procedure minimizes degradation and oxidation of sensitive protein samples and preserves the activity of the target protein.

Millipore has launched two tangential flow filtration products that allow researchers to easily and efficiently purify large volumes of protein-containing solutions. Applications typically include concentrating and desalting proteins from cell culture supernatants and fermentation broths. The high flux, low binding Millipore membranes used in these devices provide high protein retention and recovery.



Ad-A-Gene Vectors

GE Healthcare launched Ad-A-Gene Vectors, a large range of ready-to-use, validated adenoviral vector gene delivery reagents. The reagents expand the possibilities for lead compound profiling, drug target validation and basic research by enabling the rapid development of transient cell signaling assays. The system can greatly aid secondary screening and early-stage drug discovery by allowing researchers to study cell signaling effectively in a wide variety of cell types including those that are physiologically relevant to disease states.

Thermo Electron has introduced the Appliskan, filter-based multimode microplate reader. Designed to fit into even the busiest laboratory, the Appliskan provides the flexibility to carryout a wide range of microplate assays, from basic absorbance to advanced dual-label FRET and BRET assays. It can read 6- to 384-well plates and has the added advantage of onboard shaking and incubation. These, together with the optional dispensers, make the Appliskan the ideal instrument for assay types such as cytotoxicity, DNA analysis, immunoassays, multiplexing, and protein activity, amongst many others.

MasterPure Yeast RNA Purification Kit

The new MasterPure Yeast RNA Purification Kit provides all of the reagents needed to purify RNA from cell types including Candida, Saccharomyces, Schizosaccharomyces, and filamentous fungi. The kit utilizes a rapid desalting process to remove contaminating macromolecules, avoiding toxic organic solvents, bead beating, and spheroplasting. The resulting MasterPure RNA is of high quality necessary for microarray gene expression analysis.

Brinkmann Instruments has introduced the RDT Carousel Work-Up Station, which is designed to make post synthesis work-up quick and easy, avoiding downstream bottlenecks. Compact and lightweight, the RDT Carousel Work-up station will accept up to 12 x 70ml columns for filtration, phase separation, liquid/liquid extraction or SPE in to one or two identical stackable racks. This enables parallel and/or sequential work-up of 12 samples and collection of product into a lower rack with RDT Carousel Reaction Tubes or standard 1 inch boiling tubes.
