Agencourt FormaPure system

Beckman Coulter introduces the Agencourt FormaPure system for fast extraction of DNA and RNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples. The FormaPure system can be automated to process 96 samples in just four hours (including the paraffin digestion step), with significantly higher yields than other methods. This scalable system enables the researcher to process a few to hundreds of samples per day.

BenchCel is a robust benchtop microplate handling system that delivers the speed and precision of much larger and more expensive automation platforms. The BenchCel system features a novel high-speed plate shuttle that accesses the integrated microplate stacks and two peripheral instruments. This customizable, modular design provides the flexibility and scalability required to meet the needs of the most diverse laboratory environments. Users can choose from two-, four-, or six-stack instrument configurations, and from four different sizes of removable racks with capacities of 15 to 70 standard microplates. Adding to the BenchCel’s versatility, the delidding function removes and replaces microplate lids as necessary.


CellInjector version 2.0

The Biosciences Group of Fujitsu Computer Systems released version 2.0 of its CellInjector automated microinjection system for large-scale direct injection of agents through cell membranes. A major new feature is the ability to enable automated injection of adherent cells as well as suspended cells. CellInjector is an efficient, high-throughput, automated, computer-controlled method for directly injecting a large number of cells. It achieves throughput up to 200 times faster than conventional manual microinjection.

Experion version 2.0

Bio-Rad Laboratories issued Experion version 2.0, a new software upgrade for its automated electrophoresis system that includes additional features and functions that make the system more competitive. New features include an e-gram overlay icon, chip compare, internal standards, and multi-instrument operation using a single computer. The 2.0 upgrade will be included with new Experion systems.

This latest release of the digital reconstruction software features three major areas of enhancement: 3D feature-based modeling, advanced color texture generation, and greater versatility with user-defined patch layouts. The software automatically creates accurate models from any physical part, making it ideal for emerging applications such as mass production of customized devices, build-to-order manufacturing and digital asset archiving for automatic recreation of legacy parts.


Molquest for Windows 1.4

Softberry released Molquest for Windows 1.4, containing 18 new programs for DNA, RNA, and protein sequence analysis, bringing the total number of programs to 106, and several viewers of genomic information and macromolecular structure. The new programs include a set of EST clustering programs; PromH-AN program for mammalian promoter prediction using two homologous sequences; and Find-miRNA, for finding miRNA genes in a variety of eukaryotic genomes. HumanHap550+ and iSelect Infinium

Illumina announced the availability of two new Infinium genotyping products that provide an unprecedented degree of customization for customers performing whole-genome and focused-content SNP genotyping. The new HumanHap550+ product allows customers to add up to 120,000 custom SNP markers to supplement the standard content provided on the existing HumanHap550 BeadChip, yielding up to 670,000 markers for association studies. For focused-content applications, the new iSelect Infinium product allows customers to create a custom array of up to 60,000 SNP markers per sample with 12 samples per chip. The multi-sample offering will typically be used by researchers who have already performed whole-genome genotyping and/or have narrowed down SNPs of interest to a large, yet focused set of markers relevant to the particular disease they are studying.



Cell^M and cell^R

Olympus released its cell^M and cell^R for multicolor fluorescence 3D imaging in live cells. Introduced specifically for investigating live cell processes, the Olympus cell^M and cell^R are highly advanced fluorescence imaging workstations. At the top end of the Olympus cell* family of imaging products, both offer specialized all-in-one Illumination Systems with highly sensitive digital cameras for multicolor fluorescence time-lapse image acquisition. Their imaging software package features the intuitive Experiment Manager — a user-friendly graphical interface enabling easy set up and execution of even the most complex experiments, with minimal training. The all-in-one MT20 Illumination System, allowing ultra-fast wavelength switching and attenuation, is specifically designed to meet experimental requirements for real time image acquisition by highly sensitive CCD cameras.


SAIVI Small Animal Antibody/Protein labeling kits

Invitrogen announced the availability of its SAIVI Small Animal Antibody/Protein labeling kits, which offer a controlled degree of labeling with Alexa Fluor dyes for in vivo imaging. They also provide flexibility and convenience in combination with the bright, photostable Alexa Fluor dyes to optimize labeling and purification, as well as a modulating reagent to optimize antibodies and proteins for reproducible in vivo imaging results.




Genewave announced the launch of AmpliSlide, its high-sensitivity reflective microarray slide product range. AmpliSlide combines a proprietary, fluorescence-amplifying dielectric coating of the slide with highly-efficient binding chemistries. AmpliSlide 570/670 A (aminosilane) is designed for double color (Cy3/Cy5 or analogous dyes) DNA microarray experiments. This special reflective coating is finely tailored to provide up to 16-fold signal enhancement balanced in both colors.


SurePrint microarrays

Agilent Technologies released its new SurePrint microarrays, which contain more than 240,000 features. These DNA microarrays are optimized for applications such as gene expression, array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH), array-based chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP-on-chip), methylation, splice-variant analysis, and microRNA studies. Agilent will offer a variety of formats to allow researchers to optimize the density and the number of microarrays on each slide. These include a single array with 244,000 features and 2-, 4- and 8-array formats containing 105,000, 44,000 and 15,000 features per array, respectively.

SearchLight Infrared Arrays

The new SearchLight infrared arrays are created by spotting up to 24 different capture antibodies per well in each well of a 96-well plate. Following a traditional sandwich ELISA procedure and the addition of streptavidin conjugated to an infrared dye, the plate is scanned using an Odysseyor Aerius Infrared Imaging System. The intensity of each spot is calculated using SearchLight Array Analyst Software. Protein concentrations in a sample are then quantified by comparing the intensity of the spots in the unknown sample well to the corresponding standard curves.

Agencourt RNAdvance Tissue System

Beckman Coulter introduces the Agencourt RNAdvance Tissue System, based on the Agencourt SPRI (Solid Phase Reversible Immobilization) paramagnetic bead nucleic acid purification technology, for isolation of total RNA from mammalian samples. The new system produces clean RNA with high recovery, in single-tube or 96-well formats, while eliminating organic solvents, vacuum filtration and centrifugation steps. The procedure enables higher recovery of total RNA than traditional column-based approaches, allowing researchers to maximize the use of precious tissue samples without compromising RNA integrity.

Thermo Electron announced the release of the enhanced Finnpipette BioMate plus pipetting aid. The increased motor power allows faster pipetting of volumes from 1-100 ml, with batteries that last up to eight hours under constant use. Comfort and grip are assured by the lightweight, ergonomic design which features a new oval-shaped handle for greater fit in the palm. Easy, soft-touch controls and the improved slide switch give the user totally precise flow control. The Finnpipette BioMate plus can be fitted with all standard plastic and glass pipettes, and when not in use the stand supports the Finnpipette BioMate plus and fitted pipette in multiple positions. With easy selection of the aspiration and dispensing speeds via the slide switch, both small and large volumes can be handled with greater speed and precision.

GelPilot range of Molecular Weight Markers

Qiagen launched the GelPilot range of Molecular Weight Markers — 12 innovative markers that combine many valuable features, including easy-to-remember fragment patterns and sizes, convenient ready-to-load buffer, and defined fragment concentrations facilitating DNA quantification. Each marker contains a single intensive band to aid determination of DNA size. The ready-to-load buffer contains three tracking dyes to facilitate the optimization of agarose gel run time.


miRNeasy Kits

Qiagen extends its range of RNA purification solutions with miRNeasy Kits. These new kits facilitate miRNA research by enabling purification of total RNA including miRNA or enrichment of miRNA and other small RNAs in a separate fraction. The miRNeasy Mini Kit is suitable for low-throughput purification. The miRNeasy 96 Kit is the first kit available for high-throughput purification in a 96-well format. miRNeasy Kits enable purification of total RNA including RNA from 18 nucleotides upward. Alternatively, an miRNA-enriched fraction and a total RNA (>200 nucleotides) fraction can be purified separately. RNA can be purified from a wide range of animal tissues and cells, including difficult-to-lyse tissues such as skin, muscle, and fat.



Designed for use with several Thermo UV-Vis spectrophotometers, including the Spectronic BioMate 3, the Spectronic GENESYS 10 Bio, and the Evolution 300, the nanoCell offers unique sub-microliter analysis capabilities for DNA and protein analysis in the life science laboratory. The nanoCell allows scientists to obtain the maximum amount of information from minute sample volumes. This is especially critical in laboratories performing assays for nucleic acids, RNA/DNA and protein concentrations, that wish to limit the amount of sample used for analysis. The innovative nanoCell accessory is shaped exactly like a cuvette and fits into any standard 1 cm cuvette holder and can be used for small volume measurements as needed. This allows the scientist the option to perform some assays in traditional cuvettes, reserving the nanoCell accessory for small volume measurements. For convenience, the nanoCell offers interchangeable 1 mm and 0.2 mm measurement pathlengths.
