CGH Module for ImaGene 7.0
BioDiscovery has released a new array comparative genomic hybridization module for its ImaGene 7.0 software. ImaGene can now provide array-based DNA copy number analysis and visualization of DNA gains and losses. According to BioDiscovery, its aCGH module features a statistical algorithm based on the circular binary segmentation approach, which eliminates the need for knowledge of advanced scripting languages or statistical settings.
Luminex GeneMarker Module for MLPA Analysis
SoftGenetics has announced that its GeneMarker software now includes a Luminex-MLPA module that is capable of analyzing data from Luminex instruments (Luminex 100 and Luminex 200). The software is compatible with the Luminex instrument data format (*.csv). GeneMarker’s Luminex-MLPA module automatically performs background subtraction, and flags suspect intensities according to user-specified thresholds. The software selects the least variable sample from the sample set to act as the reference for determining copy number change within sample sets.
Gene Codes has released a new version of Sequencher, its DNA sequence assembly and analysis program. Sequencher 4.7 features enhancements to the variance table, which now allows editing of data and automatic updates to sample sequences and chromatograms. Additional improvements include enhanced GenBank feature handling, updated HTML help, the ability to save projects as templates for repetitive analyses, and expanded file exporting.
Beckman Coulter has launched its IOTest Anti-OSCAR-PE conjugated monoclonal antibody. OSCAR is the first FcR-gamma-associated molecule described on human myeloid dendritic cells, and is an activating molecule involved in antigen capture and presentation that may modulate the response of both innate and adaptive immunity. With the Anti-OSCAR-PE monoclonal antibody, researchers can tag a new antigen that is thought to be implicated in the tolerogenic function of dendritic cells. The pre-formulated, standardized monoclonal antibody is provided in 100-test vials, and is approved for research use only.
InnoCyte Cytochrome C Release Kit
EMD Biosciences has announced the launch of its InnoCyte Flow Cytometric Cytochrome C Release Kit, which relies on the selective permeabilization of the cellular membrane for release of cytosolic components while leaving the mitochondrial membrane intact. Viable cells will display mitochondrial staining of cytochrome c while cells committed to the apoptotic process do not stain. This kit can be used with either flow cytometry or fluorescence microscopy applications.
RAPid 4 system
Akubio’s RAP·id 4 system provides real-time measurement and analysis of biomolecular interactions. Based on the company’s resonant acoustic profiling (RAP) technology, the system can analyze up to four samples simultaneously in a constant flow environment. The electronics system provides binding data for purified proteins as well as for proteins in complex mixtures, such as cell culture supernatants and periplasmic extracts. Automated sample handling, precise temperature control, and data analysis software allows for minimal user intervention. Delivering information on affinity, binding kinetics, and target concentration, the system has been optimized for protein-protein interaction analysis.
iPlex Gold assay
Sequenom has launched the latest generation of its multiplex genotyping product, the iPlex Gold assay. The assay enables a typical fine mapping genotyping study for about 3.5 cents per data point by providing routine multiplexing at 36 times per reaction. Depending upon the complexity of the specific assay, the new iPlex Gold assay can multiplex up to 40 times per reaction, which represents customer savings of approximately 25 percent per study compared to the original iPlex assay and improves project efficiency.
Dyversity 2D Gel CCD Image Analyzer
Syngene has announced availability of Dyversity, a multi-functional image analyzer designed for the rapid generation of 2D protein gel images. The imager consists of a computer-controlled darkroom containing a 16-bit CCD camera. Dyversity’s high-quality camera has the fastest capture times per channel for fluorescent and visible dyes of any current CCD-based system. The system itself features a manual zoom lens that can be fitted with a range of filters, UV, and white lighting options to allow imaging of all commercial 2D protein stains. Images produced by the system can be downloaded for analysis by Dymension, Syngene’s 2D gel image analysis software.
pixelfly qe CCD Camera System
The Cooke Corporation announced availability of the pixelfly qe, its high-performance, 12-bit CCD camera system. The system consists of an ultra-compact camera head, which either connects to a standard PCI or a compact PCI board via a high-speed serial data link. The available exposure times range from 5µs to 65s. A digital temperature compensation is integrated instead of a space consuming thermo-electrical cooling unit. All camera functions can be remotely accessed and controlled via digital interface. This compact digital CCD camera system is suited for scientific and industrial imaging applications, including microscopy, spectroscopy and quality control.
GX-274 ASPEC Probe Instrument
Gilson has announced availability of the GX-274 ASPEC, a high-throughput four-probe instrument capable of processing up to four samples in parallel. Based on positive pressure elutions, this instrument uses a sealing cap technology in which each cartridge is sealed, run, and monitored individually. The two 406 Dual Syringe Pumps allow the user to transfer liquids, process up to four samples in parallel, and monitor each fluid path individually with pressure sensing.
Array CGH Platform
PerkinElmer has launched Spectral Genomics Array CGH Platform, which comprises a system for comparative genomic hybridization studies. The setup includes the SpectralChip 2600 array, a bacterial artificial chromosome chip for genome profiling, as well as the Constitution Chip 3.0 for investigational use in cytogenetics. The Constitution Chip covers 42 disorders and 41 subtelomeric regions. PerkinElmer’s new platform also includes the ScanArray System, labeling reagents, and SpectralWare Analysis Software.
Chip2 Array Family Additions
Oxford Gene Technology has extended its Chip2 family of ChIP-on-chip microarray products with the addition of four prokaryote species. These include Escherichia coli 0157, Salmonella typhimurium LT2, Salmonella typhimurium SL1344, and Streptomyces coelicolor. The Chip2 microarrays can be used to identify the binding positions of global DNA-binding proteins, analyze changes in a particular protein’s binding under various environmental conditions, and as a model system for gene regulation. Each Chip2 microarray is fabricated using OGT’s in situ synthesis platform and interrogates the genome of interest with a probe density of 22,000 oligonucleotide features. ChIP microarray data generated can then be analyzed in relation to its relative gene position using an OGT-developed ChIP browser.

MonsterScript Reverse Transcriptase
Epicentre’s MonsterScript Reverse Transcriptase is a thermostable enzyme that completely lacks RNase H activity. The enzyme retains high activity at temperatures greater than 50°C, and produces full-length cDNA greater than 15 Kb from picogram amounts of RNA. The enzyme is available in the company’s MonsterScript 1st-Strand cDNA Synthesis Kit, which also includes betaine to enable improved reverse transcription through regions of difficult secondary structure. Epicentre also launched its Ampligase Thermostable DNA Ligase, which the company says is stable and active at much higher temperatures than the T4 DNA ligase.
iBlot and iPrep Protein Systems
Invitrogen has introduced the iBlot Dry Blotting system and the iPrep purification instrument. The iBlot system transfers proteins from polyacrylamide gels to nitrocellulose membranes in preparation for downstream analysis. A self-contained unit, the iBlot device uses disposable blotting stacks with integrated transfer membranes, offering the convenience of a bufferless, plug-and-play system. The iPrep instrument automates nucleic acid purification using Invitrogen’s ChargeSwitch technology.
K-Alpha Materials Characterization instrument
Thermo Electron has announced upcoming availability of the K-Alpha Materials characterization instrument. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the K-Alpha enables monitoring of the nanometer-level surface chemical composition of solid materials. An integral ion source achieves high-resolution depth profiling, thus facilitating true three-dimensional analysis. The K-Alpha is also equipped with an internal calibration system, and the instrument’s operation is suited to both routine and research applications. PPS Silent Surfactant for MS
Protein Discovery’s PPS Silent Surfactant is a mass spectrometry-compatible cleavable surfactant that disrupts cell membranes, solubilizes hydrophobic proteins, and improves proteolytic digestion efficiency for more comprehensive proteome analysis. The surfactant hydrolyzes at low pH into removable, soluble by-products that do not interfere with mass spectrometry instrumentation or readings. PPS Silent Surfactant improves mass spec signal intensity and increases the number of discrete peaks visible on mass spectra. PPS Silent Surfactant is available in 10 mg vials.
SureSpray Nanospray Chip
Phoenix S&T’s polypropylene chips, featuring SureSpray technology for continuous positive ion nanospray, are supplied framed or unframed. Framed chips are designed for use with a chip holder, while unframed chips may be used for other purposes. Samples are supplied to the chip by means of a 360 mm diameter silica capillary. The capillaries are either gold-coated if used with Phoenix S&T’s chip holder with a high voltage contact plate, or uncoated with a union liquid junction. A 50 cm gold-coated capillary and a box of chips are supplied with the purchase of the chip holder. The SureSpray technology is also available as HPLC columns.
Biomed 3000 GeXP Methods
Beckman Coulter has introduced its Biomek 3000 GeXP Methods for automated gene expression sample preparation. This new software plug-in provides methods to prepare samples for the GenomeLab GeXP Genetic Analysis system on the Biomek 3000 Liquid Handling Workstation. The suite includes fully validated methods for RNA sample prep, quantification, and normalization and reaction setup. The new Biomek 3000 GeXP Methods replace manual configurations, enabling the processing of 96 samples in less than four hours. The automated sample prep component incorporates Agencourt’s RNAdvance Cell chemistry, based on solid phase reversible immobilization magnetic bead-based purification technology.
CD OptiCHO Solution
Invitrogen has announced the availability of its CD OptiCHO medium, a serum-free solution that is optimized to support the growth of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and maximize protein expression from these cells. The chemically defined, protein-free formulation contains no hydrolysates, which improves lot-to-lot consistency and reliability. In addition, CD OptiCHO medium provides up to 40 percent greater growth and protein production than existing media for select cell lines and applications. The product is available through Invitrogen’s tissue culture product division, Gibco.
Oligo PRO Purity Analysis System
CombiSep has unveiled its Oligo PRO system for performing DNA and RNA oligonucleotide purity analysis. The Oligo PRO is the second in the CombiSep’s series of analyzer systems for the pharmaceutical and life science industries. The system can obtain relative purity of 96 different samples in parallel via capillary gel electrophoresis with UV absorbance detection. Fully integrated software with predefined methods for capillary conditioning and separation provide ease-of-use. Advanced data analysis software features automatic and manual peak integration capabilities, along with the ability to generate reports for an entire 96-well plate or for individually selected samples.
