New BCW Index Takes Slight Loss

The new BioCommerce Week Index, which includes eight new companies, dropped .3 percent for the short trading week of Dec. 26 to Dec. 29. Shares did not trade on Monday due to the New Year’s holiday, or on Tuesday due to President Gerald Ford’s funeral.

The Index has eight new companies including Affymetrix, Becton Dickinson, Caliper Life Sciences, Cepheid, Illumina, Luminex, Sequenom, and Third Wave Technologies (see related article). In addition, General Electric, due to its diverse makeup, has been dropped from the Index, though the firm’s healthcare operations will continue to be covered in BioCommerce Week.

For the trading week ended last Friday, Qiagen led gainers with a 2.6 percent rise. Molecular Devices led decliners with a fall of 3.9 percent.

In comparison, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained .4 percent for the same three-day trading period, while the Nasdaq rose .1 percent, and the Nasdaq Biotech Index slipped .4 percent.
