MWG Biotech To Sequence Bacterium for Aventis

NEW YORK, March 20-MWG Biotech said today that its Italian subsidiary will be sequencing and annotating the complete genome of an 8 megabase bacterium for Aventis Bulk SpA, an Italian division of Aventis Pharma.


The companies did not disclose which bacterium was being sequenced or reveal any financial details regarding the agreement.


MWG Biotech, based in Ebersberg, Germany, provides instruments, services, and sequencing for genomic research. The company's Ebersberg labs boast a reading capacity of roughly 7 million bases a day, allowing for complete sequencing of a bacterial genome in three to four months.


The company's Italian subsidiary was founded in Florence in 1999 and now employs 11 staff.
