Molecular Devices Soars on MDS Acquisition

Shares of Molecular Devices closed up nearly 53 percent for the week ended Tuesday, following Monday’s announcement that MDS would acquire the firm for $35.50 per share (see related article). While Molecular Devices’ shares did not reach its 52-week high of $36.26, three other firms in the BCW Index did hit their 52-week high this past week. Qiagen closed up 4.22 percent at $16.78 for the tracking period, while Bio-Rad Laboratories climbed 2.8 percent to close at $85.15, and Becton Dickinson rose nearly 4 percent to close at $76.85.
 
Applied Biosystems, which last week posted second-quarter revenue growth of 10 percent (see related article), led decliners for the week, closing down 3.72 percent.
 
Overall, the Index rose 2.41 percent. In comparison, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell .1 percent, the Nasdaq gained .7 percent, and the Nasdaq Biotech Index dropped .5 percent.
