Modest Gain to Begin 2006 for BCW Index

The BCW Index began the new year with an unremarkable gain of .45 percent for the trading week ended Jan. 3. The top gainers for the week were Harvard Bioscience, which closed up 6.5 percent on Tuesday, and Molecular Devices, which closed up 4.2 percent.

Molecular Devices was one of two companies in the Index to touch 52-week highs on Tuesday, as the firm's shares hit $29.49 during the day before settling at $28.76. PerkinElmer also hit a year-long high of $24.12 before closing at $23.99. Stratagene showed the sharpest decline, falling 4.1 percent during the tracking period.

In comparison to the Index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Biotech Index both rose .6 percent, and the broader Nasdaq market gained .8 percent.

For the full-year period running from Jan. 5, 2005 to Jan. 3, 2006, the Index gained 3 percent. During the year, Becton Dickinson was dropped from the Index following its sale of Clontech to Takara Bio, and Qiagen was added. Both of those actions occurred on July 5. On Sep. 13, Fisher Scientific was also added to the Index.
