Michael Nemzek, Jean Mooney, Dow Wilson, Chris Guzy, Martha Trela

Michael Nemzek joins Velocity11 of Menlo Park, Calif., as vice president of marketing, the company said this week. Nemzek previously was general manager of discovery tools at Symyx Technologies. Prior to that, Nemzek was an executive with Cellomics; Genosys Biotechnologies (now part of Sigma-Aldrich); Tropix, now part of Applied Biosystems; and EG&G, now part of PerkinElmer. Velocity11 develops automation technologies for pharma/biotech and genomics labs.

Steve Copertino, president of Precise Marketing Solutions, a marketing consultancy, joins Sonnenberg, Haviland & Partners of Hillsdale, NJ, a firm specializing in advertising, sales promotion, and marketing communications. The company lists Becton Dickinson as a client.

Viola Kung has been promoted to partner in the law firm of Howrey Simon Arnold & White of Menlo Park, Calif. Kung previously worked at Molecular Devices and is a research scientist with a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and a JD from Santa Clara University School of Law.

Jean Mooney, Colorado public affairs manager for Agilent Technologies, joined the executive board of the Mountain States Council of AeA, the technology industry trade association said.

Dow Wilson joins Varian Medical Systems as corporate vice president and president of the oncology systems business, the company said this week. Wilson was CEO of the GE Healthcare’s information technology business.

Chris Guzy joins Ballard Power Systems of Vancouver as chief technology officer, effective Jan. 17. Previously Guzy was general manager at GE Healthcare in Budapest, Hungary.

Ludwig Terán was named vice president of sales and marketing for SecureSpeed of Chino Hills, Calif. He has previously worked in sales, management and marketing with Amersham, Whatman and Thermo Electron.

John Hulburt was named vice president of finance, chief financial officer, treasurer, and assistant secretary of Datawatch of Lowell, Mass., the company said this week. Hulbert previously was director of audit and SEC compliance at Bruker Biosciences.

Timothy Mayleben joins the board of directors of Rubicon Genomics of Ann Arbor, Mich., a marketing partner of Sigma-Aldrich, the company said this week. Mayleben previously was COO and CFO of Esperion Therapeutics, which was acquired by Pfizer in 2004. Mayleben replaces Richard Sloan, co-founder and financer of Rubicon. Sloan will serve as a board observer for Rubicon, the company said.

Martha Trela joined Affymetrix in a sales and marketing position from Applied Biosystems, where she was vice president for worldwide marketing programs and communications.

Burrill & Company has made a number of promotions and staff changes, the San Francisco, Calif.-based merchant bank said last week. Giovanni Ferrara, Richard Haiduck, and James Watson were promoted to managing directors; Bryant Fong has become principal; Stephen Kujawa has become director; and David Haselwood and Rizwan Velji have become senior associates. In addition, the company appointed Ann Hanham, John Kim, Roger Wyse, Mike Ullman, John Haag, and Tim Young as general partners.
