NEW YORK, Jan 4 - Large Scale Biology Corporation said Thursday that it has completed the first version of its human proteome database, the Human Protein Index v1.0.
HPI v1.0 contains quantitative measurements of the protein components of all the major tissues of the human body, the company said in a statement.
The company plans to use the database to discover diagnostics, drugs, and drug targets.
" Our initial analysis of the HPI has turned up new candidate diagnostic markers of tissue damage, as well as fascinating insights into the differences between tissues, for example, in different regions of the brain,” said Leigh Anderson, president of LSBC’s proteomics subsidiary, which carried out the work. “We believe that over the long term, the HPI provides a unique foundation for our ongoing investigations of specific diseases,"
LSBC currently uses the HPI as the core of its Molecular Anatomy and Pathology database, which compares diseased and normal tissues to find pathology-related proteins.
The company used its ProGex proteomics platform to compile the database. A set of 157 tissue databases was examined to yield a total of 115,693 proteins. The company estimates that HPI v1.0 currently covers the protein products of 18,000 human genes. The human genome is estimated to contain between 28,000 and 120,000 genes.
LSBC stated that future versions of HPI would expand the database “substantially” to include tissues from additional donors and information on lower-abundance proteins.
A paper describing the completion of the database is scheduled to appear in the first issue of the journal Proteomics , on January 18.
The company was not immediately available for comment.
