NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – The US Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute plans to provide $1.5 million per year to fund pilot projects aiming to develop new genomics and molecular biology technologies that could be useful to JGI and its partners who are engaged in energy and environmental research efforts.
The JGI Emerging Technologies Program (ETOP) plans to fund between three and five of these pilot genomics projects for up to three years beginning in 2013. At the end of that period JGI will evaluate the projects for potential longer-term funding.
With the ETOP program, JGI hopes to identify and fund new and existing JGI partners to develop projects that focus on new technical capabilities that the institute could provide to the community of researchers who use its facilities and programs.
These pilot projects may seek to develop high-throughput functional genomic capabilities; microfluidic molecular biology approaches; cost-effective, efficient, and scalable means for isolating high-quality DNA and RNA from fungi, microbes, and plants; methods for functional characterization of microbes and microbial communities, including non-destructive functional characterization of single cells; and large-scale microbial phenotyping.
JGI's strategic plans for its genome sciences activities were outlined in a workshop report issued last summer that addressed the central scientific questions the institute aims to pursue and its technology, data, and knowledge requirements.
