Jerry Walker, Matthew Friel, Iain Mattaj

Akubio, a biosensor technology developer, has appointed Jerry Walker, formerly European president of GE Healthcare Discovery Systems, as chief executive officer. Prior to the acquisition by GE Healthcare, Walker spent over 18 years at Amersham, holding various senior management positions including vice president of informatics and vice president of global service.

Fisher Scientific has named Matthew Friel as senior vice president of corporate development.

Friel was most recently with GenTek, where he served as executive vice president of finance and business development, as well as vice president and CFO. Before this, he was a managing director at Latona Associates, a merchant banking firm acting as both a principal and an advisor in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and project-financing transactions.

Friel has also served as an assistant director in the mergers and acquisitions group of Barclays de Zoete Wedd, the investment banking arm of Barclays Bank, said Fisher. He has a BS in business administration from Georgetown University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Iain Mattaj took office as director-general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory on May 1, EMBL said last week. For the last five years, he was EMBL's scientific director.
