Invitrogen Shares Rise on Plan to Sell BioReliance

Shares in Invitrogen rose 10 percent in the week following its announcement that it would sell its struggling BioReliance business (see BioCommerce Week 2/14/2007). The firm’s stock had been inching up from its 52-week low of $54.70 reached on Dec. 1, but jumped following the announcement, as well as fourth-quarter results that beat Wall Street expectations. Sigma-Aldrich also had a strong week, finishing up 8.7 percent for the tracking period ended Tuesday.
 
Sequenom led decliners with a drop of 4.8 percent for the week.
 
Overall, the BCW Index closed up 1.8 percent. In comparison, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased .9 percent, the Nasdaq climbed 2.2 percent, and the Nasdaq Biotech Index rose .7 percent.
