Grants for Top-of-the-Line Tools


As many of our core lab readers told us they’d most like to be able to add state-of-the-art, cutting edge instruments to their facilities, Genome Technology got to wondering about funding opportunities for high-end technologies. We moseyed over to the NIH’s National Center for Research Resources, which is known for providing grants to scientists for the purpose of buying new equipment.

Late this summer, NCRR announced it was giving out $21.5 million in grants for high-end biomedical instrumentation purchases. These are one-time grants, capped at $2 million apiece, designed to assist with purchasing equipment that costs more than $750,000. In this funding round, the new instruments will help scientists perform protein interaction studies with bacteria; characterize nucleic acids for infectious disease and cancer research; and sequence microbial organisms, to describe just a few.
