NEW YORK, July 26 (GenomeWeb News) - Gene Network Sciences has won a $137,800 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant from the NIH to help it continue developing its cardiac modeling efforts, the company said today.
The six-month award, given by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, will help GNS improve protocols for safety testing and providing a software tool for data integration in cardiac electrical activity simulations.
According to the company, there is currently no experimental model for identifying the effect that a drug-induced change in ion channel electrical properties may have on cardiac wave propagation. GNS said this grant will help it "address these risk assessment issues" and "establish a data collection protocol and software tool that that will greatly improve the efficiency of expanding the simulation to include additional ionic currents."
As part of the grant, the GNS will develop a "standardized, in vitro IKr assay. The company said it chose this channel because an estimated 40 percent of early compounds have IKr activity.
The grant comes on the heels of two Phase I awards worth around $200,000 that GNS won in February. One grant will help pay for the development of a simulation platform for creating computer models of cardiac electrophysiology, and the second supports the extension of the company's technology to include models of cardiac signaling networks.
