Genomic Solutions Funds Researchers to Develop Proteomics Technology

NEW YORK, April 25 – Genomic Solutions will fund two researchers at the University of Louisville to develop next generation isoelectric focusing (IEF) technology, the company said Wednesday.

The researchers, Jon Klein and Elias Klein, of the University’s Medicine and Kidney Disease departments, will receive funding from Genomic Solutions through the University of Louisville Research Foundation to design IEF technology that is easier to use and automate, and that will extend the shelf life of IEF gels used in the analysis of proteins.

Genomic Solutions will have the exclusive rights to commercialize the technology, according to a company statement. The amount of the grant was not disclosed.

The IEF technology will complement the company’s Investigator Proteomic System, a suite of products for use in the analysis of 2-D gel electrophoresis and other proteomics techniques.

The first goal of the research is to develop and produce IEF gels in plastic tubing to verify the results of bench-scale tests of the technology, which showed that the gels were easier to use and more easily automated.

“We feel this 'gel-in-a-shell' technology is an ideal candidate for commercialization - and is a symbiotic fit with other products in our fully-integrated Investigator Proteomic System," Greg Kinch, Geomic Solutions’ director of business development, said in a statement.
