CombiMatrix Leads Gainers in GWDN Index in August; Hits 52-Week High Today

NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Shares of CombiMatrix rose nearly 28 percent during the month of August, propelled by second-quarter revenue growth of 55 percent. The firm’s shares have risen sharply since the release of those results and hit another 52-week high today of $16.38.

The Mukilteo, Wash.-based molecular diagnostics firm led all gainers in the GenomeWeb Daily News Index for the month of August. The only other stock to eclipse the 20-percent growth mark for the month was that of Bio-Rad Laboratories, which was up around 21 percent.

Bio-Rad’s shares also shot up after the firm reported strong second-quarter results at the beginning of the month. The firm said that its Q2 revenues had risen 33 percent and its profit jumped 69 percent.

The stocks of four companies in the Index — DeCode Genetics, Nanogen, Caliper Life Sciences, and Helicos BioSciences — dropped more than 20 percent in August. The biggest decliner was DeCode Genetics, which fell around 31 percent, reversing a positive trend in July.

DeCode Genetics was the top stock in the Index for the month of July, climbing 70.2 percent. It rose steadily throughout July after falling to below $1 per share in June. The stock also got a boost later in July after the firm was featured in a report on NBC Nightly News.

Overall, the Index gained 2.9 percent in August, beating out the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+1.5 percent), the Nasdaq (+1.8 percent), and the Nasdaq Biotech Index (-3.5 percent).

While GenomeWeb Daily News covers many more firms than the 35 that are in the Index, those that have been included have a significant portion of their business focused on molecular biology and cellular research tools and are publicly traded in the US.
