Cepheid Shares Rise 12.9 Percent; MDS Joins Index

Shares in Cepheid rose 12.9 percent for the five-day trading period ended Tuesday. The firm received the CE Mark from European regulatory authorities for its Smart HBV assay last week.

Its shares climbed further after popular financial TV host Jim Cramer made positive comments about Cepheid and the potential for the firm to win a contract from the US Department of Veterans Affairs for a staph test. He also said Cepheid could be a good takeover candidate, which would be music to the ears of investors who just profited from Beckman Coulter making a bid for Biosite at a hefty premium (see related article).

Sequenom led decliners for the week with a drop of 7.5 percent.

This week, MDS joins the BCW Index following its acquisition of Molecular Devices, which has ceased trading.

Overall, the Index rose .6 percent. In comparison, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed .9 percent, the Nasdaq rose 1.2 percent, and the Nasdaq Biotech Index increased 1.1 percent for the tracking period.
