Cepheid Patents Nucleic Acid Prep System

NEW YORK, Aug. 29-Cepheid was granted a patent earlier this week for its automated cell capture, nucleic acid extraction, purification and concentration technology.

The patent covers Cepheid's system for using fluidic circuits in a cartridge to collect microorganism samples and automate the laborious process of nucleic acid purification and concentration. That technique is an important part of the company's GeneXpert rapid genetic testing platform, now under development.

The patent was awarded on Aug. 27 by the United States Patent and Trade Office.
