Caliper Shares Rebound; Sequenom Continues Rise in July

NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Shares of Caliper Life Sciences reversed a negative trend from the month before as its stock rose around 53 percent for the month of July to be among the top gainers in the GenomeWeb Daily News Index.

The top stock for the month was Decode Genetics, which jumped 70.2 percent, rising steadily throughout the month after falling to below $1 per share in June. The stock also got a boost later in July after the firm was featured in a report on NBC Nightly News.

Caliper’s shares had declined steeply and steadily through the first half of the year, but it bounced back during July — though it still trails a 2008 high of $5.66 reached in early January. The firm launched new benchtop instruments for genomics and proteomics research during the month.

Sequenom, whose shares rose 108 percent in June, continued its rise, closing July up 33.8 percent. Its shares hit a 52-week high of $23 on July 16. Earlier this week, the company said that increased sales of its MassArray system and consumables drove a 25-percent increase in second-quarter revenues to $12.8 million from $10.2 million in the second quarter of 2007.

Following those three firms, three others saw their stocks gain 20 percent or more for the month: Nanosphere (+25.8 percent), Orchid Cellmark (+22.7 percent), and Celera (+20.2 percent).

Molecular diagnostics firm Cepheid led decliners for the month with a drop of 39.1 percent. The firm’s shares took a hit last week after CEO John Bishop said in a statement accompanying its second-quarter results that “non-core clinical sales of products to other companies were below our expectations and we expect non-core clinical sales of products to other companies to continue to be below our expectations for the remainder of 2008.”

As a result, Cepheid lowered its revenue guidance and projected a larger loss for full-year 2008.

Affymetrix’s shares also fell as a result of disappointing second-quarter results and a lowered revenue forecast for 2008. It was the second time this year that the firm had revised its 2008 revenue guidance downward. Affy’s shares declined 23.4 percent for the month.

Vermillion’s shares also lost more than 20 percent for the month. The firm said in mid-July that it had hired investment bank ThinkPanmure to help it identify and evaluate “strategic alternatives” for maximizing shareholder value.

Overall, the shares of only six of the 35 companies in the GWDN Index fell during the month. The Index finished July up 6.2 percent.

In comparison, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell .2 percent, while the Nasdaq gained 1.4 percent, and the Nasdaq Biotech Index returned a 15.7 percent increase.

While GenomeWeb Daily News covers many more firms than are in the Index, those that have been included have a significant portion of their business focused on molecular biology and cellular research tools and are publicly traded in the US.
