Beckman's Shares Fall on S&P Negative Rating

Beckman Coulter's shares finished the trading week ended Tuesday down 9.25 percent after Standard & Poor's Ratings Services revised its outlook for the company to "negative" from "stable" due to what it termed a more aggressive acquisition policy by the firm. S&P took the action after Beckman announced its acquisition of Diagnostic Systems Laboratories in a debt-financed transaction worth $138 million (see BCW Briefs).

Beckman was one of three firms to drop more than 5 percent for the tracking period. The others were Fisher Scientific and Molecular Devices. None of the 16 companies in the BCW Index rose 3 percent or more. PerkinElmer's shares rose 7 percent after announcing that it would divest a couple of business to focus on life sciences (see Feature in this week's issue), but it still closed the tracking period up just 2.08 percent.

Overall, the BCW Index fell 3.53 percent for the week — not as poor of a performance as the Nasdaq Biotech Index, which dropped 7.1 percent. The broader Nasdaq declined 3.7 percent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the period down 1.8 percent.
