The BioCommerce Week Index: Jul 7, 2006

Qiagen Added to the BCW Index; BD Dropped on Clontech Sale

This week marks the first roster change in BioCommerce Week's 10-month existence. Qiagen, a multi-platform molecular biology tools provider, competes with many of the players already covered by BioCommerce Week and has partnerships with others. The company has been very active in the molecular biology tools space and has made several moves this year to expand its product range and geographic reach (see table below). As such, the Dutch firm has been added to the Index.

Becton Dickinson, on the other hand, was tracked by this publication solely because of its ownership of Clontech. Now that BD has announced an agreement to sell the unit to Japanese firm Takara (see article in this week's issue), the firm does not meet the criteria for inclusion in the Index and will no longer receive routine coverage.

This week's Index has been adjusted to reflect Qiagen's participation. For the four-day trading period ended July 5 (the markets were closed for the July 4 holiday), the BCW Index rose .83 percent, nearly matching the Nasdaq Biotech Index's increase of .82 percent for the same period. The broader Nasdaq market gained .43 percent for the week, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped .33 percent.

For the first six months of 2005, the Index, which included BD but not Qiagen, gained a miniscule .23 percent. The high for the Index during that time was 36.10, reached on Feb. 8, and the low was 32.89 on April 19 (see chart).
