Waters Shares End Fall With 23-Percent Loss

Shares in Waters Corp. fell 23 percent on the five-day period ending Tuesday, closing at $35.70, compared to $46.26 last week. For the day, some 1.4 million shares changed hands, compared to an average volume of 850,000 shares, as the company's stock gained a fraction.

In the last week, Waters lost more than $1.2 billion in market capitalization after warning that its first-quarter revenues and earnings would widely miss its previous forecast (see article).

Three investment-bank analysts reacted by downgrading the stock, and one downgraded rival companies — PerkinElmer and Thermo Electron — within his coverage companies. PerkinElmer shares fell 4 percent in the five-day period while Thermo Electron dropped 1 percent.

Waters' fall led 12 of the 15 companies in the BioCommerce Week Index whose shares fell on the week. Stratagene gained 11 percent in the period after filing its 10-K annual report with the SEC. Bruker gained 6 percent after filing its 10-K.

The index fell 3 percent, closing at $33.28 with its fourth straight weekly loss, and its sixth in the eight weeks since reaching a high-water mark of $36.10 in February.

The index trailed the major indices, which finished the week up. The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 gained nearly 1 percent in the period while the Dow was up a fraction of a percent. The Amex pharma index was up over 2 percent for the same period, while the Amex biotech index closed even for the week.
