BCW Index Rises as Four Firms Reach 52-Week Highs

The BioCommerce Week Index posted a healthy 2.56 percent gain for the five-day trading period ended Tuesday, as four components of the 15-company Index hit 52-week highs. Agilent, Bio-Rad, Qiagen, and Sigma-Aldrich all touched yearly highs during the tracking period. Agilent has been hovering within a couple of dollars of its 52-week high for the past few weeks.

Qiagen's shares climbed steadily throughout July and hit its high of $13.83 on Tuesday, a day after it announced the acquisition of protein sample prep technologies (see related article), before closing at $13.48. Bio-Rad also has had a steady climb since early May, when it reported a 14-percent increase in revenue for its first quarter. Investors appeared to be unfazed by the news last week that rival Invitrogen would acquire BioSource International — a Bio-Rad acquisition target. Sigma-Aldrich hit its 52-week high on a strong second-quarter financial report, which boasted a 27.4 percent growth in revenue.

Though it didn't hit a 52-week high, Stratagene came close, as its shares climbed 22 percent during the five-day tracking period. The unusually robust gain was due to a brief article published in the most recent issue of BusinessWeek spotlighting the firm's growth potential.

In comparison, the Dow Jones gained a miniscule .1 percent for the week, while the Nasdaq gained 1.9 percent, and the Nasdaq Biotech Index rose 2.1 percent.
