Applied Bio, Millipore Team Up to Develop Sample Prep Consumables

NEW YORK, Dec 18 - Applied Biosystems and Millipore said Monday that they would jointly develop and sell sample preparation consumables for proteomics.

The companies said in a statement that the deal would allow them to leverage Applied Biosystems’ experience in proteomics and mass spectrometry and Millipore’s expertise in developing sample preparation technologies used to remove and purify proteins.

Applied Biosystems said that more efficient sample preparation tools would be needed in order to keep the cost per analysis down as research speeds up.

" As the throughput of our mass spectrometry systems increases, new, cost-efficient sample preparation strategies will be required to keep pace," Michael Hunkapiller, president of Applied Biosystems, said in a statement.

“In addition, new consumables should help build the recurring revenue portion of our mass spectrometry business," Hunkapiller added.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
